Welcome to St George’s Hospital Boat Club! With roots dating back to 1839, SGHBC is one of London’s oldest rowing clubs, regularly competing in regional and national events, including Head of the River Race, BUCS, and many more. We also take part in various charity-focused events, such as monthly challenges and 24-hour indoor rows for a variety of healthcare charities.

Currently, we have a mix of 8s and 4s, and we boat on the Thames on most Wednesday afternoons and weekends, and the club prides itself on flexibility when it comes to individual availabilities. The rest of our training is made up of indoor land erg sessions and there is supplementary weight training for those who want to go that step further. A classic weekend with SGHBC looks like this:

  • Monday – Land training from 5pm onsite
  • Tuesday – Bimonthly circuits
  • Wednesday – Water training in the afternoon @ ULBC
  • Thursday – Land training from 5pm onsite
  • Weekend – Water training (timings are variable and work around squad availability)

As SGHBC is part of United Hospitals (UH), you’ll have a chance to meet medics from other universities across London during UH competitions and social nights throughout the year. Team social events are a key part of who we are at SGHBC. Our sports nights, Circles, run most Wednesdays throughout the year at the Students’ Union bar, coordinated by our social secretaries alongside other sports teams at St George’s.

So, whether you’re an experienced rower, or have never been on the water before, come along and give rowing a go today!
