It’s coming up to the end of the year and your Students' Union has been securing great wins for you!
In case you’ve missed it, here are some of the things that we did in November to make sure you’re having a great time at City.
Societies
- The number of society events this year have been at its highest with societies running more fun events for their members to enjoy and meet new people. So far, we have processed a whopping 187 Society Events Forms with many evening events selling out on tickets!
- Fancy joining a new society? We’re looking forward to the 20 new societies on the scene including the Taylor Swift Society, the Iranian Society and the Salsa Society. We have allocated nearly £4,000 in grant spending to societies.
Events
- We run a range of fun events that are open to all students including weekly movie nights and popular theatre trips. When you’re on campus during the World Cup season, you can keep up to date with all the matches in our City bar viewings!
- The first of many Culture Fest’s took place with over 200 students joining us to celebrate and enjoy different international cuisines, music and societies. The night topped up with a showstopping dance from the Bollywood Dance society!
- Our exciting Winter Fair will be taking place in the month of December with a host of fun arts and craft events, festive photo opportunities and more! Watch this space for a Winter Wonderland trip at the end of the year.
Cost of Living Summit – Assembly Meeting
Our first Assembly meeting of the academic year focused on the Cost of Living crisis and what it means for students at City and in Higher Education. After hearing from the panel, the students in room worked together to create a ‘Cost of Living manifesto’ with several recommendations for the university to take forward. Students highlighted the need for additional financial support, cheaper catering on campus, removing additional costs such as graduation and printing and lobbying for an effective timetabling for students.
Unibattle wins
Union Advice collaborated with City’s Funding Team on the national Blackbullion competition called Unibattle. We had a stall for 2 days on the University Building walkway where we encouraged students to sign up to Blackbullion, and complete financial guidance training with the possibility of winning prizes. One lucky City student even won the national prize of £100 for one of the days!
Check-ins
Over 700 first year students have received a call from our student callers checking that they had everything they needed to start at City and to understand what more the Union and the University could do to help with incoming student issues.
Study Well
Study Well has returned with a bang this year, starting off with Tuesday Trim’s for men’s mental health awareness month. Over 20 students received a free haircut in exchange for conversations with barbers to talk about mental health and wellbeing.
Global Goals Week
During the Sustainable Global Goals week in November, the Union collaborated with the Sustainability team to deliver two incredible activities, including a movie night showcasing the film ‘Kiss the Ground’ as well as a small activity on campus where students could personalise a plant pots and get seeds from City’s very own walled garden.
Love Wins
City Students’ Union and the City LGBTQI+ Society hosted the Love Wins: Celebrating City’s LGBTQI+ Community event to bring together the City community to stand against discrimination on campus, celebrate the LGBTQI+ community and promote a culture of inclusivity at City. Staff and students signed a pledge to condemn and call out homophobia, transphobia and discrimination in all its forms.
