Academic Impact: Union update October 2022

We’ve had a long summer without you… check out what your SU has been up to to give you the best experience this year.

1.

Our Fresher’s Fair came and went with an absolute bang at the Business Design Centre. We had 80 Societies join us and saw over 5000 faces throughout the day! We even debuted a new design on the trusty tote bags we gave out.

2.

We hope to give you a Welcome to remember this year. With nearly 100 events going on across September and October. We’ve already had events from silent discos, boat parties, lots of meet and greets, our competitive crack the safe activity, and we’re still going!

3.

We’ve trained 100 committee members from our societies over the summer and have made their training more accessible via LinkedIn so that they can be equipped to run the societies you’re a part of.

4.

Since their election, your Assembly Members have met twice to set the priorities of the Union this year, and they also listened to updates from the SU Officers on the work they are doing around their portfolios and their priorities.

5.

We’ve been awarded with our running title of Excellent for our Green Impact Award. At City SU, we’re committed to making sustainable changes within the university by working towards the Sustainable Development Goals and having an Officer portfolio dedicated to the area.

6.

Over the summer, we have had 22 Micro Project Placement students working on various different projects with us for the first time. This will support our planning and delivery for next year. 81% of our MPPs said they would recommend the SU as a host for future placements. We will be hosting more placements this year so you can meet other students working across different projects in the SU and enhance your CV!

7.

We’ve welcomed our new Urdang students to City with a massive Hello in the Urdang Students Welcome!

8.

We are continuing to collaborate with SHPS this year to offer free British Sign Language to City Students. We had 40 students participating last academic year and due to the positive impact and feedback provided by students, we’ve rolled them out again this year and sold out in a record 30mins!

9.

Our Money Advice team are working with Blackbullion to help students feel smart about their money and learn pro-tips on how to save and budget. We want students to feel prepared for university and their future, and feel confident about their financial health. Find out more and sign up to Blackbullion here!

10.

Our Advice Team have been providing bespoke support to student with complex cases including Disciplinary, Complaints and Fitness to Practice in addition to managing a high number of appeals cases, with this being the peak season for students seeking advice on appeals.  Advisors have invested considerable time and effort, in some cases are significant number of hours guiding students through the process and offering advice as needed.  Advisors have supported students through advocacy work and provided a empathetic ear to their individual concerns, with appropriate signposting and referrals.
