Yes, the time has come again...another general election. City Students' Union has provided you with this guide to ensure that wherever you are on 12th December and wherever you stand in the debate, you will still have the opportunity to vote. 

When is the Election?

Thursday 12th December 2019. Polling stations are open 7am to 10pm. 

When do I need to be registered by?

You need to be registered to vote by 23:59 on Tuesday 26th November 2019. 

How long does registering to vote take? 

FIVE MINUTES - 300 SECONDS - THAT'S IT. So, whilst you're on the loo or maybe waiting for the kettle to boil, register to vote and have your say in how your future is decided. 

Who is eligible to vote in the General Election? 

To be eligible to vote you must:

1. be registered to vote

2.  be 18 or over on the day of the election (‘polling day’)

3. be a British, Irish or qualifying commonwealth citizen

4. be resident at an address in the UK (or a British citizen living abroad who has been      registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years)

5. not be legally excluded from voting.

What do I need?

You’ll be asked for your National Insurance number (but you can still register if you do not have one). If you don't know your NI number or want to know where you can find it, please click here. 

I'm not in the UK on election day, can I still vote?

Of course you can, we've got you covered! You can either vote by post or you can ask for someone to vote on your behalf (vote by proxy). For information on how to apply for one of these options please click here.

My term time address is different to my home address, can I register in two places?

Yes, as a student, if you split your time between two addresses for example, you can register to vote at both addresses as long as they’re not both in the same election area. But you can only cast one vote. 

Can I register at Uni?

Absolutely! City Students' Union will have an election stand from Monday 4th November - Thursday 7th November, 11am- 2pm to get people voting in our own elections and also provide students the opportunity to register to vote in the general election. 

What do I do once I've registered? 

After you’ve registered, your name and address will appear on the electoral register. Depending on your local authority you may receive a confirmation email and/or letter in the post.
