This year on May 6th, there are a number of elections that will be held across the country. The elections will be an opportunity to have your say and to cast your vote for the candidates which best represent your views on issues that matter to you.
Local elections
Across England thousands of council seats will be up for grabs. Elected local councillors will represent you on various issues at a local authority level.
These once in a 4 year elections will decide who runs local public services and how they are run - from schools to social care, libraries and bin collections; it is important that you have your say on who represents you on issues that directly affect day-to-day life, as your votes will influence decision-making at a local level.
The Mayor of London and London Assembly Members elections
Londoners will elect a Mayor and 25 members of the London Assembly to represent the people living in London. The London mayor's powers include setting bus and Tube fares, policing, the environment and deciding targets for the number of affordable homes: all things that will affect you.
The Assembly holds the Mayor to account by examining Mayoral strategies, decisions and actions to make sure that they are in the public interest.
Who can vote and how?
Voters in the elections must be 18 or over on the day of the election.
All voters must be:
- registered at an address in the area where they want to vote
- a British citizen, an Irish or EU citizen or an eligible Commonwealth citizen
- not legally excluded from voting
There are three ways to vote:
- in person at a polling station (if you’re on the electoral register you will been sent a polling card which will list your designated polling station)
- by postal vote
- by nominating someone you trust to vote for you (a proxy vote)
Social distancing will be observed at polling stations. Voters are encouraged to bring their own pens. Voters who have been shielding are encouraged to vote by post.
