Happy Black Future's Month 2024!

“Hello everyone, my name is Ashton Shepherd, the Student Union Deputy President at City St. George’s University of London. This year, I have been planning a range of Black Futures Month initiatives for what is more commonly known as black history month. The reason for the name change is because I feel that it’s important to focus on celebrating black culture and community rather than only focussing on our painful history. I have been collaborating with staff and students to make this year’s Black Futures Month is better than ever!

Some of the things you can look forward to this month is having the wall of black excellence a space where student and staff stories across both the Clerkenwell and tooting campus will be showcased on digital screens. We’ll also be sharing some student experience videos, where we can hear about the part different cultures play in shaping people’s lives. Some of our black members of staff will also be coming together to give you career advice based on their own experiences – to help you feel confident with your future career moves!

Events wise, we have a sip and paint where students can relax and make friends while unleashing their creative side. Our Black Futures Month Festival will take place at the end of the month where people can come in their traditional clothing and enjoy a range of things such as games, African food and music from black artists. We also have a black students forum, providing students with a platform to share their experiences at City, allowing staff to develop a better understanding of student needs. There’s plenty more lined up that will be revealed within the weeks ahead so stay tuned for more details."
