City Students' Union's Carrot Awards recognise any of City's students, staff, alumni, and allies who have made a substantial and sustained contribution well beyond the call of duty to the effectiveness and long term sustainability of City Students' Union. 

The Awards ceremony also features Category Awards, which recognise Student Groups and individual students at City who've made outstanding contributions to the university community in 2017-18, whether through student societies, volunteering, or being an excellent student representatives.

How to submit a nomination:

Please view the categories below and submit your nomination at the link whilst nominations are open. Anyone can nominate (nominations welcome from students and staff at the university) and you can even nominate yourself. Only current students at City, University of London may be nominated for an award. You can make as many nominations as you want in as many categories as you want:

Carrot Awards

The ‘Carrot Awards’ celebrates and recognises the outstanding achievements and contribution of particular students, staff or individuals involved in any Students’ Union activity. This can be from sports to student advice, from raising awareness to student representation. This nomination for a Carrot Award is for any City staff member, student or individual who has gone above and beyond what is expected of them.

The Carrot is City Students’ Union’s mascot, and is over 100 years old. It dates back to when sporting activity took place at Palmers Green when the horse drawing all of the equipment was regularly encouraged with a carrot to continue its journey. And thus King Carrot became the mascot and later the name of the highest accolade given by the Students’ Union.

Carrot Awards Criteria

At a meeting of a Super Grand Council on the 1st June, 1935, it was resolved:

“That the Carrot Awards shall be made to those who, in the opinion of the Grand Council of His Most Noble Majesty, have rendered outstanding service to the Union Student Group within or without the Royal Precincts.”

The following criteria are offered as a guide in the selection of those worth of the Noble Order.

(a) Any persons who have put more work into their offices or positions than basically required, or who have continued to maintain an arduous office in an efficient manner.

(b) Any persons who, by virtue of their leadership, efficiency or any other qualities of character, have put new life into, or maintained a high standard in, any aspect of Union affairs.

For the award of the PACHYDERMATOUS PROTAGONIST (GOLD), both (a) and (b) should be considered.

For the award of ALLEGORICAL ANOMALY (SILVER), either (a) or (b), or parts of both, should be considered.

For the award of PROSTHETICAL PROPITIATION (BRONZE), those persons who have made an outstanding contribution to Union activities should be considered.

For the award of HONOURABLE MENTION, those persons who have made a valuable contribution to Union activities should be considered. Carrots may be awarded to any other person whom Grand Council may wish to honour.”

Category Awards

Student of the Year Award

This top tier award will recognise a student who has demonstrated a significant and outstanding contribution this year towards building of the student community at City, University of London. Their voluntary efforts could have been through a student Student Group, RAG, Students’ Union democracy, Freshers Week, the Union Support Service, City Volunteering, or any other opportunity located at City, University of London. This award is one of the most prestigious accolades with which City Students’ Union recognises an individual student.

The Student of the Year Award will be chosen directly from the award winners of the Carrot Awards and the other Category Awards.

Student Group of the Year Award

This Award recognises the most outstanding achievement by a Student Group that has showed exemplary activity, creativity, and dedication to the improvement of the student community at City, University of London this academic year. The winning Student Group will have raised the bar, surpassed expectations, and become a shining example of everything a good Student Group can be. This top tier award has a long tradition at the Students’ Union and is extremely highly regarded.

Most Improved Student Group Award

This award recognises a pre-established Student Group that has significantly improved and developed during the current academic year. This award is for a Student Group who have raised the bar with their activities, engaged more students at City, University of London and grown significantly in quality, through the hard work and dedication of the student volunteers leading the group.

Best New Student Group Award

This Award recognises the outstanding achievement of a new Student Group that has successfully started during the current academic year, and showed strong commitment to their development and future, exhibiting a high quality of planning and activity.

Student-Led Event of the Year Award

This award will be given to recognise a successful student-led event held at City, University of London which was innovative, community-building, ambitious, highly successful in its aims, or significantly raised awareness of a relevant topic or culture. To qualify, the event must be within current academic year, and held on a City campus. The primary organiser(s) of the event must be a City student or group of students.

Best Contribution to Charitable Fundraising Award

This award is for the project, event, or campaign that has had the most successful impact towards charity fundraising or the charity fundraising (Raising And Giving) community on campus. From raising significant amounts of money for a charitable cause, to developing a project with local community members, or embodying creativity, positivity, efficiency, and best practice for community-based charity fundraising.
