National Student Money Week (NSMW) is an annual event that is dedicated to helping students manage their finances and budgets more effectively. This year, the event will take place from 13th March to 17th March, and it will be delivered by City Students' Union Advice Team. The week will include a range of events and activities aimed at supporting students to become more financially savvy and help them deal with the current cost of living crisis. What is going on?
Cost of Living Fair
The first event on the NSMW schedule, taking place on Monday 13th March at the Pavilion Tait Building from 11am-3.30pm. The fair will feature stalls with support services, games, free food, and financial guidance to make students more aware of the current cost of living crisis and how City and the SU are working together to support students.
Free Breakfast
On Tuesday, 14th March, in the SU Common Room from 9am-10.30am. The event aims to encourage students to come along, have breakfast, and meet other students while finding out what support is on offer at City throughout the current cost of living crisis.
Movie Night
From 6.30pm on Tuesday 14th March showing The Pursuit of Happiness! This is a good one be prepared to shed a tear or two!
Treasure Hunt
Another exciting activity planned for NSMW 2023, running from Tuesday 13th March to Thursday 15th March. Students can scan QR codes around campus to hunt for clues, leading to a guaranteed prize upon completion. If successful, students can complete a short online Blackbullion Pathway to win bigger prizes, such as a £50 voucher or an Air Fryer. Blackbullion is a free financial guidance platform for students that offers useful pathways on budgeting, investment, taxes, and more.
Piggy Bank/Money Box Painting
Wednesday 15th March, students can join in the fun by painting their own ceramic piggy bank during the event. Students can then start saving all their loose change for something special or just a rainy day. All materials will be provided for free, but spaces are limited, so students should get a ticket early.
Barclays Digital Eagles: Money Mentoring Webinar
Online with finance experts Barclays, taking place on Thursday 16th March from 1pm-2pm. The webinar aims to provide guidance on managing money effectively, helping students to budget and be more financially conscious.
1-1 Budgeting Advice Drop-Ins
Online, Friday 17th March 1-4pm, an opportunity for students to have a virtual 1-1 budgeting session with an experienced advisor from Union Advice. Students can figure out a suitable budget plan, signposted to further support and funding that they may be entitled to, and have their financial worries listened to confidentially. Students can email Unionadvice@city.ac.uk to set up an advisor via MS Teams.
Onsite Discounts
In addition to the range of events and activities aimed at supporting students' financial management skills during National Student Money Week 2023, there are also various discounts available to students throughout the week. These discounts are aimed at helping students to save money and stretch their budgets further.
