Officer Statement on Bangladesh

City St George’s Students’ Union recognises the recent resignation of former Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina as well as removal of the former Bangladeshi government responsible for the killings of thousands of innocent civilians. Whilst we are relieved that the cycle of violence has come to an end, we understand that there is a long way to go for things to return to normal. We express joy and relief as many individuals, thought to be killed by the government, have been found alive and returned to their homes after years of disappearance. We mourn the loss of those who are no longer with us and stand in solidarity with those who were deeply affected. Their lives had meaning and value.

As a Union committed to the safety of all and freedom of speech, we support the efforts of justice and healing in the nation. The courage of the students and people of Bangladesh inspire us all. Their sacrifices were not in vain, leading to the nation’s freedom from tyrannical rule. City St George’s Students’ Union will forever be committed to the advocacy of human rights, peace and freedom of speech.
