What is the Student Members' Meeting?

This meeting is a large forum, chaired by the speaker of the Assembly, where a wide variety of students come to debate and determine the direction of the Union. As the Union is directed by you, our student members, we use the meeting to adopt a collective stance on issues and decide what actions we will take.

Any student can attend and have their say on the items discussed. This is a great opportunity to have a hands-on impact on the democracy and running of the Union.

What happens at the meeting?

The Student Members' Meeting plays a crucial role in the governance processes of your Union. It sees students come together to debate and discuss the work the Union does. Students will receive the financial accounts of the Union from the previous financial year, approve the affiliations of the Union including BUCS, and ask questions to Officer Trustees.

An outline of this year's meeting (this might change slightly):

13:00 - 13:30: Lunch

  • 13:30 - 15:30: Student Members' Meeting
  • 15:30 - 16:00: Break
  • 16:00 - 18:00: Assembly

Submit your idea!

Any student at City St George's can submit a priority, stance or statement to be voted on.

How to submit an idea:

  • Priority: An important or urgent issue or goal for the student body. The Assembly usually sets four annual priorities to guide its work but sometimes additional ones can be agreed.
  • Stance: The official position or viewpoint of the student body on an issue or ideology, reflecting their beliefs and guiding decisions and actions.
  • Statement: An official declaration of the Union's position, opinion, or decision on an issue, used to communicate intentions and related actions.

More information about submitting a paper can be found here https://www.csgsu.co.uk/pageassets/change/assembly/papers/Proposing_an_Idea_Assembly_Nov24.pdf.

If you're struggling with what to write but have something you would like to discuss, please email us at suassembly@city.ac.uk.

All ideas must be submitted by Wednesday 26th March, 23:59 via this link; https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=SVlh3dBboE2sUijvjTNjcxKfxuoQWY9FmfrrtWUhjrtUQVhYQjQ4VzNXSlEwWUlIMFRYMlo0MFczTSQlQCN0PWcu

How will we discuss ideas?

The Assembly Speaker plays an important role in ensuring that discussions are balanced, inclusive, and productive. If the Assembly Speaker has proposed an idea, the Deputy Assembly Speaker will chair the discussion, or the Union President will do so if the Deputy is unavailable.

During the discussion

The Assembly Speaker ensures discussions are balanced and productive. If the Speaker proposes an idea, the Deputy Speaker or Union President will lead the discussion. The Speaker welcomes the proposer, sets ground rules (e.g., no interrupting, respect all opinions), and guides the discussion. If a consensus is reached, the Speaker summarises the decision. If not, a vote is held.

Voting

Voting can be in-person or online, with a summary provided before voting.

After the meeting

The decision is communicated to the student body online. Adopted ideas are integrated into the Union’s views and decision-making. A list of priorities and statements is published on the Union’s website.

If your idea is adopted, you'll work with the Union's President and Assembly to implement it.

Full details of the way ideas are discussed can be found here: https://www.csgsu.co.uk/pageassets/change/assembly/papers/Proposing_an_Idea_Assembly_Nov24.pdf
