Sunflower Lanyard - Hidden Disabilities Awareness
There are some disabilities that can affect peoples’ lives that are hidden away, and not noticeable immediately such as mental health issues, hearing issues and learning difficulties. These disabilities can make daily life more demanding and they are hard for others to spot and understand. A good personal example from me is the bus. I was once shouted at by a bus driver because I didn’t put my hand out to signal her to stop, I proceeded to explain that I was in fact too blind to read the bus numbers and I didn’t want to be an inconvenience by stopping buses I didn’t intend to get on. This was pretty embarrassing for me and I’m sure for the driver, but it could have all been avoided with a tad more awareness.
The City SU now has the sunflower lanyard available to anyone who believes they need it. The lanyard acts as a subtle symbol to those around you that you have a disability and may need extra help. Wearing the lanyard is always a choice by the user so you can choose to wear it when you want. If you see someone with the lanyard, please treat them with dignity and respect like you would any other person just be more mindful and aware.
