Brexit, Brexit and a bit more Brexit. I get it, you’re probably pretty bored about politics by now. But the City Students’ Union still needs your help. Our Autumn Elections are upon us and our candidates are in, which means we now need you to vote for the candidates that best represent your wants and needs. Here are some reasons why you should care. 

If it’s not your job to vote, then whose is it?

It’s easy not to care about something when there are so many people at this University because presumably, someone else is caring? But this is not the case. To create change, you have to be involved. You have to do it yourself. If everyone cares, then the burden is shared and means it does not rest with those who decide to go to the polling station between 4^th – 7^th November to cast their vote.

Your vote will make the difference.

You know the saying, ‘every vote counts.' And in a general election where millions of people vote, this may seem hard to believe, but your vote really does matter. Elections on a smaller scale, such as at a University, are sometimes won by only a few votes.

We also use the Single Transferable Voting (STV) system, which differs to what we use in a genral election. It means fewer votes are wasted and increases proportional representation. Click here to read more about how STV works.

Many people devoted their entire lives to give you the right to vote.

In the UK, it wasn’t until 1928 that women had equal voting rights to men and in South Africa, it wasn’t until 1994 that all races were allowed to partake freely in the elections. Truly shocking stuff. So, don’t let the efforts of those who worked tirelessly to make elections accessible to all go to waste.

You can always vote RON.

Re- Open Nomination or RON as we like to call it. By not voting you become just another statistic. However, by voting for RON, because you don’t approve of any of the candidates running, you become a voice for the disengaged. If candidates see there are a lot of RON votes, they will reconnect with what the voters want. So no matter how you feel about the candidates, we have you covered.

Decide who makes the issues you care about.

Everyone cares about something.

Whether it’s about keeping Wednesday afternoons free on campus to play sport, or to ending evening exams- everyone cares about something in their University life.  Be the change you want to see and cast our vote this Autumn.
