We’re back with our latest academic wins and we’re better!

We’re bringing you our latest academic impacts of the new academic year. Your Students’ Union have been working hard this autumn to make sure that we’re going above and beyond in everything that we do so you have the best student experience.

Here are some of our latest wins to date!

Welcome 2021

  • We know City students wanted a Welcome to remember this year, so we made sure that we delivered a fun packed Welcome Week for returning and new students. From silent discos, to open top bus tours, to our competitive crack the safe activity, we ran over 45 events during the week. That’s a whopping 2000+ tickets booked across all our events through our website, all with the help of a 18 person staff team at your SU, your 3 full-time Sabbatical Officers, and every student staff in blue tees!!

  • Our annual Welcome Fair went with an absolute bang, being accommodated in the City Sports building. We had 80 stalls set up including sports, societies and your Students’ Union, and saw over 2500 faces throughout the day! You’ve probably picked up our trusty tote bags from here.

Check-in Calls

  • During the start of Term 1, we ran two rounds of Student Check-in calls to returning and incoming students, offering support, signposting to services, and checking in on their wellbeing before starting the new academic year. Our amazing team of student check-in callers had over 1200 conversations with incoming students during the Pre-welcome round.

  • And in our recent Welcome Check-in’s, we talked to 2500+ returning students and incoming postgrads! We will be working to improve our service with outcomes based on what students have said to us.

Democracy Review

  • We are reviewing our current democratic structures and coming up with innovative and more accessible ways to make change. The Students’ Union will be holding the first Student Council meeting of the year mid-November where the democracy review outcomes will be approved.

Student leaders

  • We’ve trained 51 student leaders across 45 societies to support the societies that you are a part of in being effective and engaging for their members. For more information on getting involved with a society or creating a new society, check out our website.

  • Reps worked hard last year during the pandemic with the University and the Students’ Union to secure over 40 wins. They voiced feedback from their course such as extending deadlines and having more live lectures, helping to create positive impacts on their courses. One amazing student win that will undoubtedly have a lasting academic impact was the stopping of the suspension of a programme for new students in September!

  • We’ve recently had the Programme Representative elections to elect Reps chosen by their course mates for every programme all the way from Undergraduate courses up to PhD. Across all programmes, we are pleased to have a community of over 600 Reps this year who will make sure that the student voice is heard on each course at City.

Student Communities

  • We understand there are many different types of student communities at City; we held ten different focus groups to understand these communities and to tell us what we can do to improve their student experience.

Micro Placement Programme

  • Planning has started for up to 20 upcoming student micro placements this year, which will give students a chance to lead on projects and campaigns, get work experience, and receive accreditation as part of their course.

Big Ideas

  • Our Big Ideas platform is the place to make the changes you would like to see happen. Some ideas we’ve helped make a reality include How To Read Fast Workshop, LAB Reports Yearly Workshops, and How To Give a Good Presentation. Currently, we are in conversations with different departments on how a British Sign Language course can be delivered to City students.

Advice

  • Our Union Advice Team have been busy supporting students as City’s Contingency Regulations came to an end.

  • All our advisors are trained and ready to advise on budgeting coaching, allowing our Union Advice service to better support students in need of money management guidance.
