Your SU President, Saqlain Riaz, talks about the benefits of the best role at City!
Hi, I hope you’re well!
Would you like my job? I’m sure you’ve got a bunch of questions about the Students’ Union and what my role as President actually means, let’s get into it!
To start with, no one day is the same, genuinely. We campaign on so many different issues, be it racial equality, or more recently, no-detriment policies, the role is what you make it. You can campaign about anything you or the student body are passionate about, from the student spaces on campus, to contentious debates about tuition fees.
Being President of the Union means I’m the main point of contact. I work with so many departments across the university, and from across all levels. Not to mention other students’ unions across London, as well as the National union of students. I’ve had so many opportunities to develop both personally and professionally, from training on how to chair meetings, to attending conferences across the UK and building networks I could never have imagined.
I’ll be completely honest, I was never sure about what this job would hold for me, but the potential to enact change and develop along the way has made it more than worth my while. If you enjoy meeting people, talking to students and collaborating on exciting new projects, put a nomination in!
Being a full-time officer is phenomenal for your CV and career progression, I’ve met so many people who started their journeys as officers and used their transferable experiences to excel. You’ll miss 100% of the shots you never take. Take the leap of faith, put yourself forward to become our next VP community & Wellbeing, VP Education, or President, and work to change the lives of thousands of students!
Many thanks,
Saqlain
